We recently connected with Holly Ulewicz and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Holly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Since 2014, I have known that I wanted to invest my life and efforts into building a business that would bring healing arts like yoga into the darkest places. Back then I performed an act with flaming hula hoops under the stage name “Nocturnal Sunflower” – this was symbolic of my deepest desire to bring light into dark places. For the better part of my 20s I struggled with the idea of dualism, often feelings that my business education seemed to clash with my passion for all things spiritual and therapeutic.
In 2019, I was inside of an 8 week marketing empowerment course led by Carla Samson of Avatara Academy, trying to articulate the quality that I could best describe at the time as “dualism”. I had been working in corporate accounting for about 5 years and had noticed that the most brilliant leaders I had connected with through work, and at conferences and seminars seemed to do such a beautiful job being creative and detail-oriented, technical but still flexible, etc – they brought personality aspects that clashed together effortlessly and I knew it was the secret sauce.
I asked myself “how do I bring the divine into my duality?” The answer that arose was that there is no space for divinity in duality, that we become whole through union, not separation. And so, Divine Unity Wellness was born.
Holly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My yoga practice has been a powerful and moving tool in working through many intense moments in my life. As a teenager, I experienced a mental health crisis and yoga gave me the tools to finally take the deep breath I had been longing for. At this time I recall many loved ones telling me to just breathe. When I finally walked into a room where someone explained exactly how to breathe, the relief was immediate. A few years later, I became a yoga teacher myself and this led me through a struggle with substance abuse. I have 8 years sober today.
I knew that I wanted to share yoga with others, especially those who were suffering, as I was. I thought originally that I would open a yoga studio, but as I sharpened my vision I could see this was not the best way to be of maximum service to the community. I went on to offer Divine Unity Wellness as a space in which I could support the existing resources in my community and offer a variety of healing tools.
Today, Divine Unity Wellness contracts with six other healing businesses that range from yoga studios, to metaphysical shops, to community resource centers. This allows myself and other practitioners on my team to offer their services in a variety of locations for different communities. We always support other businesses and take on a “collaborate don’t compete” mindset.
I think this is what makes DUW really unique. We aren’t afraid of other healing businesses thriving, and do everything we can to support their mission and our own.
Some of my core offerings are yoga classes, reiki healing, an auricular acupuncture meditation and healing circles.
Many of our clients are going through transformational times in their lives, such as beating addiction, battling physical illnesses, breaking from the chains of abusive relationships and navigating career changes.
We help clients to find their inner guidance again through divine union with their soul’s voice, their ancestors and their Higher Power.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I aim to make a deep personal connection with every client I work with. I am mindful about language and often remind myself and my clients that it is an honor to be working with them. In the service industry, your presence and your energy is invaluable – so I make a commitment to my self-care, my limits, and know when to hand off client facing opportunities to other members of my team.
I am also a big believer in creating community, especially around the arm of my business that supports other teachers, reiki practitioners and health coaches. I feel we often receive training and then struggle to get started. Whether that is teaching yoga, using reiki or starting a business – mentorship and peer support make a huge difference in growing as a leader. I hold women’s networking events a few times a year, as well as reiki shares. These events really help to inspire collaboration and bring brilliant minds together.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Originality has been a key factor to growing my clientele. I strive to bring unique workshops to my clients and business accounts. This helps people try out new things and organically attracts new clients.
I get a strong connection for 1-1 sessions and training from events that offer a taste of my services. Some popular events I have hosted this year are Buti Yoga and Social Hour, Floating Reiki and Sound Bath and Women’s Empowerment Moon Circle.
